Position Summary

To develop, schedule, coordinate, and supervise a Native Tiwa language program for the Child Development Center, Education and Recreation Center After-School program, Youth Language Programs and Community Programs. To work in cooperation with Tiwa language instructors and utilize fluent speakers to provide effective language instruction. To insure that language instruction improves the level of proficiency for all tribal members. Uses appropriate technology to develop and preserve teaching and cultural resources

Supervises the Multi-media Coordinator and Fluent Speakers involved in the program

Major Duties And Responsibilities

  1. Develops, administers, and coordinates a Tiwa language program.
  2. Works extensively with the community to generate interest and commitment to the language program.
  3. Plans and conducts linguistically-oriented events and field trips for members of the community.
  4. Contracts with outside sources to provide early education training, evaluation, and linguistic consultation.
  5. Organizes Saturday Immersion Days and Week-long Immersion program and other volunteer and community programs.
  6. Controls the development of Tiwa specific language learning and educational materials for various ages.
  7. Develops and coordinates language skills, cultural and traditional educational methods and materials to more effectively acculturate tribal members in the Tiwa ways of Sandia Pueblo. 
  8. Oversees and maintains day to day activities in making historical resources available to Pueblo members.
  9. Interacts with qualified historians in researching and gathering a chronology of Tribal history, traditions, values and customs.
  10. Promotes the facility and resources to the community.
  11. Presents historically relevant material before the Tribal Council.
  12. Applies for State and Federal grants.
  13. Assists in the planning and conducting of training opportunities in the Tiwa language.
  14. Assesses the performance of staff members and contractors and evaluates compliance with program goals and objectives.
  15. Identifies and provides staff training opportunities.
  16. Work with the Grants Administrator in acquiring additional funds for the program.
  17. Performs additional duties and responsibilities as necessary or assigned

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities

  1. Sensitive to community concerns about language.
  2. Able to work well in the community and with parents.
  3. Must be able to speak Tiwa.
  4. Will understand language acquisition and methodologies.
  5. Committed to the preservation, revitalization and maintenance of Tiwa language.
  6. Background in educational practices.
  7. Able to manage a grant-funded program, including reporting, budget management, and supervision of employees

Minimum Qualifications, Education And Experience

Required

  1. High School Diploma, GED certification or equivalent.
  2. Bachelor’s Degree in Education Administration, Planning, or Community Relations and five (5) years of experience with the Pueblo of Sandia culture, language and history.  Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience totaling nine (9) years may substitute for the required education and experience.
  3. Must be able to speak Tiwa. 
  4. Must possess and maintain a valid, unrestricted New Mexico Driver’s License.

Licensing Status

  1. Must be able to successfully pass a Background and Character Investigation in compliance with PL 101.630.
  2. Will require a post-offer, pre-employment and random drug screening.

Working Conditions

  1. Duties are performed indoors.
  2. Work is normally performed on weekdays, although weekend and evening work may be required.
  3. Subject to hazard such as driving in traffic.
  4. Duties may involve walking, climbing, crouching, kneeling, sitting, and standing.
  5. Specific required movements include the following: (25 lbs., maximum)
  • Trunk – bend, twist, rotate, push, pull, carry.
  • Arms – reach, carry, push, pull, twist, rotate.
  • Legs – push, pull, twist, rotate, balance.
  • Hands – grasp, manipulate, eye and hand coordination.
