The opportunity

Delaware North Boston Holdings is hiring a full-time Sports Museum Director of Development to join our team at TD Garden in Boston, Massachusetts. The Director of Development leads and manages The Sports Museum’s comprehensive development function and is accountable for driving revenue growth and supporting long-term financial stability. Reporting to the Executive Director, this role develops and executes the organization’s fundraising strategy in alignment with established business objectives. The Director oversees diverse revenue streams, manages development operations, and leads staff and key stakeholders to achieve performance targets.

This role requires strong business acumen, comprehensive knowledge of nonprofit fundraising standards, and the ability to influence internal and external stakeholders, including Board members, sponsors, donors, and partners.

Pay

Minimum – Anticipated Maximum Base Salary: $94,100 – $127,000 / year

In addition to base salary, we offer an annual bonus plan based on company and individual performance, or a role-based, uncapped sales incentive plan. The advertised pay range represents what we believe at the time of this job posting, that we would be willing to pay for this position. Only in special circumstances, where a candidate has education, training, or experience that far exceeds the requirements for the position, would we consider paying higher than the stated range. What will you do?

Development Strategy & Functional Leadership

  • Develop, implement, and manage a comprehensive annual and multi-year development plan aligned with organizational strategy
  • Lead and oversee the overall development function, including infrastructure, systems, procedures, and daily operations
  • Supervise and develop the Development Coordinator, as well as interns and volunteers
  • Establish measurable fundraising goals and operational strategies; monitor progress and adjust tactics as needed
  • Partner with the Executive Director and Board’s Fundraising and Development Committee to refine fundraising priorities and ensure alignment with organizational objectives

Revenue Management & Growth

  • Drive revenue growth across all existing development channels to support financial performance and reduce reliance on single-source fundraising.
  • Oversee and optimize revenue streams, including:
    • Signature fundraising events (e.g., The Tradition, The Sports Museum Celebrity Golf Classic))
    • Athletic and peer-to-peer initiatives (e.g., Boston Marathon Team, NYC Marathon Team, Rodman Ride Team)
    • Annual Fund and individual philanthropy
    • Corporate foundation grants
    • Admissions-related fundraising opportunities
  • Strengthen non-event and recurring revenue streams to improve sustainability and predictability of funding
  • Monitor revenue performance, profitability, and return on investment across initiatives

New Revenue & Long-Term Fund Development

  • Identify and develop new recurring revenue opportunities to enhance the organization’s funding model
  • Support the creation and management of a long-term fundraising vehicle (e.g., endowment or reserve fund), including donor research, cultivation, and stewardship strategies
  • Apply industry knowledge and best practices to strengthen long-term philanthropic engagement

Board & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Foster a culture of philanthropy across staff and Board of Trustees
  • Support and guide board members in their development-related efforts, including prospect identification, cultivation, and solicitation
  • Manage and support the Young Leaders Council (YLC) and other volunteer fundraising groups
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with donors, sponsors, foundations, and internal stakeholders, including TD Garden colleagues
  • Influence and negotiate with external partners within defined parameters to achieve fundraising objectives

Donor Strategy & Stewardship

  • Lead donor research, cultivation, solicitation, acknowledgment, and stewardship efforts
  • Develop strategies to deepen relationships with existing donors and cultivate new prospects
  • Mine event participants and existing supporters to increase lifetime giving and transition donors toward mission-based philanthropy
  • Oversee grant application strategy and sponsorship proposals
  • Ensure consistent and compelling messaging across communications vehicles, including website and social channels, in partnership with marketing resources

Operations, Reporting & Continuous Improvement

  • Oversee development reporting and provide regular performance updates to the Executive Director and Board
  • Manage development data systems and ensure effective use of the donor database
  • Evaluate fundraising performance against goals and recommend adjustments as necessary
  • Adapt development strategies in response to evolving organizational priorities or market conditions

Scope & Impact

  • Accountable for overall development revenue and contribution to organizational net performance
  • Leads a core organizational function with impact on financial sustainability
  • Operates with decision-making authority within established strategic and budgetary guidelines
  • Influences internal and external stakeholders to advance fundraising objectives

More about you

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree preferred
  • 7-10 years’ experience
  • Non-profit experience
  • Philanthropic giving experience (endowments, other vehicles, annual funds, etc.
  • Donor research, cultivation, and stewardship
  • Event experience
  • Communication experience (website, social)
  • Desired experience with grants, board relations, and crowdfunding initiatives
