Under the direction of the Shift Sergeant, the Lead Public Safety Assistant (PSA) is a uniformed, unarmed position responsible for providing physical security to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians (SMBMI) Reservation and all its tribal members, Tribal assets, employees, customers, facilities and DPS components. Physical security includes but not limited to protecting the assets of the tribe, maintaining control of access points on the reservation and at DPS components, preventing vandalism and working with others to guard against fire, flood, and other natural disasters. The Lead PSA will act as liaison between the shift supervision and the shift PSAs. Lead PSAs must deliver critical security services in a business oriented, courteous, and professional manner. This position requires exceptional customer relations skills. Lead PSAs are involved with the public safety and security rules and regulations under the State of California, Federal, and Tribal Government codes, securing an assigned area, assisting with securing of incident scenes, identifying victims/witnesses, locating evidence, and may be asked to assist in the preparing of appropriate reports.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

1.Will complete investigative reports into non-criminal incidents such as minor patron/employee illness/injuries that do not involve contacting suspects.  

2. Responsible for details such as chip-fills, special audits, cash dispensary unit operations, etc. Conducts fixed post security and operates access control gates in the Tribal Reservation, off reservation properties and all DPS components.  

3. Assists the shift supervisors by ensuring that the shift’s PSAs complete the position rotations, lunch schedule, and other functions on time. 

4. Ensures the establishment and its surrounding premises are always protected by providing public safety services to the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians (SMBI) Reservation and all its Tribal citizens, assets, customers, team members, facilities and all DPS components.  

5. Supports and reinforces enterprise standards and procedures designed to increase overall guest experience to the best in class.  

6. Interacts formally and informally with community groups and customers of all backgrounds. Provides information about policies, procedures and ordinances that affect the visiting public and maintains good public relations with internal customers and vendors. Responds to requests for assistance and information in a helpful and courteous manner. 

7. Directs and controls pedestrian movement when necessary. 

8. Assists in the coordination of emergency procedures when requested/needed. Responds to emergencies such as fires, injuries, accidents, alarms, and other incidents, and initiates immediate action to control the affected areas, provide first responder aid or render appropriate assistance. Identifies victims and witnesses as needed.  

9. Safeguards the confidential nature of Tribal citizens, guests, department, and company data. Trained to mitigate cyber security threats such as spam email and fishing detection.  

10. Perform other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department. 

Education/Experience/Qualifications 

  • High School Diploma or GED required. 

  • Must be at least 21 years of age. 

  • Three (3) years related experience required.  

  • One (1) year in the rank of PSA preferred; three (3) years security experience with one (1) year as a Security Supervisor preferred. 

  • Excellent customer service skills.  

  • Must successfully complete a 3-month probationary period.  

  • A working knowledge of security procedures and applicable State Federal and Tribal laws, regulations and ordinances; interviewing and interrogation techniques; and an understanding of laws governing search and seizure is preferred.  

  • Related, relevant, and/or direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational requirements indicated above. 

  • Must have the ability to observe situations analytically, and objectively, and to record pertinent information accurately.  

  • Must be able to communicate clearly and concisely both verbally and in writing.  

  • Must remain calm under stressful conditions, exercise reasonable judgment and make sound decisions especially during emergency situations. 

  • Must operate a motor vehicle safely and have knowledge of state and local motor vehicle laws. 

  • Must be well groomed and clean.  Hair must be neatly groomed and styled so that it remains above the ears and is not allowed to extend below the collar.  Mustaches, when worn, must be neatly trimmed and not extended beyond the corners of the mouth, nor hang below the top lip.  Must abide by DPS policies on personal and uniform appearance.  Must wear issued personal protective equipment.  

  • Must demonstrate the ability to produce well written documents with regards to spelling, grammar, punctuation, organization, and content.  

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver’s license with acceptable driving record as determined by the insurance carrier. 

  • San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission requires you to obtain and maintain a gaming license. 

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a valid BSIS Guard Card. 

  • Must successfully complete a Field Training Program during the 90-day probationary period. 

  • Must successfully participate in mandated in-service training.  This includes, but is not limited to, weaponless defense techniques, chemical agent/Pepper Gel (optional), first aid, CPR, powers of arrest, traffic and pedestrian movement control, security details throughout the property and off-site business locations, report writing, applicable policies and procedures.  

  • Must successfully complete New Employee Orientation department training, which will include National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses.
