Ponca Gaming Enterprise an Enterprise Fund of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska

Niobrara, NE

The Ponca Gaming Enterprisewas formed on the 20th of November, 2010 pursuant to Tribal Council Resolution #10-70 as an instrumentality and commercial enterprise of the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska. The Tribe is a federally recognized Native American entity (approx. 5,000+ members) originating from the Dhegiha Siouan group.

Originally in Nebraska/South Dakota, they were forcibly removed to Oklahoma in 1877, resulting in the famous "Trail of Tears" led by Chief Standing Bear. The Enterprise operates in a 15-county service area without a traditional reservation.

Location & Structure: The Ponca Gaming Enterprise Tribe has no formal reservation, but a designated service area spanning 15 counties in Nebraska, Iowa, and South Dakota, with headquarters in Niobrara and offices in Norfolk, Lincoln, Omaha, and Sioux City.

History & Culture: Historically, the Ponca lived in earth-covered lodges, cultivated crops, and hunted bison. They are closely related to the Omaha, Osage, Kanza, and Quapaw nations.

Forced Removal & Restoration: Following the 1877 "Trail of Tears" to Oklahoma, the tribe fought for their rights, with Chief Standing Bear winning a landmark 1879 court case affirming that Native Americans were "persons" under U.S. law. The tribe was terminated in the 1960s but regained federal recognition in 1990 via the Ponca Restoration Act.

Modern Status: The Enterprise focuses on providing health, social, and educational services to its tribal members.
