Job Description

Under the direction of the Senior Vice President of Direct Investments, the Acquisitions and Business Development Director researches and recommends acquisitions and investments on a risk-relative basis to grow SMBMI?s direct investment portfolio. With the long-term financial health of the Tribal Nation in mind, the Director works closely with the SVP to identify growth opportunities through acquisitions, investments and joint ventures in the following industry categories: gaming, hospitality, hotels, leisure, restaurants, entertainment and real estate. The Director sources, evaluates and executes transactions that are aligned with SMBMI?s strategic priorities and drive significant long-term value for the Tribe. The ideal candidate will have a background that demonstrates a history of objectively and analytically assessing investment opportunities and a proven background in mergers and acquisitions as well as negotiating complex deals with multiple stakeholders. The Director will be skilled at managing multiple, competing priorities, have patience and maturity to build strategic relationships and possess an ever-present point of view towards the future. The ideal candidate will demonstrate an innate curiosity and ability to anticipate and adapt to new innovations, competitive threats and changing customer needs.

 

 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

 

1. Manage deal processes with particular acumen on process management, internal and external communication, and transaction execution from sourcing through closing.

Formulate presentations for a variety of audiences, including highly detailed analyses for deal team and concise, summary versions.

3. Formulate and assess future expansion strategies and potential business models across industry segments that can impact the Tribe?s economic development, such as the future of I-gaming and sports betting. Assess markets, regions and jurisdictions with gaming potential.

4. Develop and maintain dynamic financial models to assess investment opportunities across a range of operating and financing scenarios. Collaborate with Finance team on long-term portfolio and liquidity planning for the Tribe?s sovereign wealth fund.

5. Manage, train and coach a team of talented analysts to develop future leaders for the team and enterprise.

6. Work with outside advisors to source, evaluate and execute on acquisition opportunities.

7. Develop and maintain databases and news / information sources for market intelligence in target industries and subsectors.

8. Analyze competitive threats and opportunities, from not only a financial perspective, but also the legal and political impacts.

9. Perform other duties as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department.

10. Assumes other responsibilities, duties, tasks and assignments that contribute to the mitigation or response to any public health emergency.

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

This position will supervise other Direct Investment team members, may supervise clerical support and may oversee or otherwise direct outside consultants as required. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization?s policies and applicable laws.   Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning reviewing and directing work; evaluating and appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Requirements

 

Education/Experience/Qualifications

 

  • Master of Business Administration (MBA) or Master of Science in Finance, Investments, or a related field from an accredited university is required.
  • A minimum of ten (10) years? experience in corporate development, business development, corporate finance, investment banking, private equity, consulting or investment management is required.  Investment experience gained in a mission-driven organization will be viewed favorably.
  • Minimum of five (5) years supervisory experience is required.
  • Equivalent combination of education and progressive, relevant and direct experience may be considered in lieu of minimum educational/experience requirements indicated above.
  • Experience in and passion for gaming, hospitality, leisure, entertainment and / or real estate industries.
  • Prior experience with negotiations, contract development, and due diligence.
  • Knowledge of capital markets dynamics and experience-based knowledge of assessing the impact of market dynamics on targeted assets and opportunities.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and translate significant quantities of data into information and discern key findings, including ability to synthesize, develop, package and communicate concise, logical, fact-based presentations, and make well-founded recommendations. Demonstrated ability to design sound business strategies based on a structured approach, integrating scientific, commercial and financial analyses that enable business success and create tangible enterprise value.
  • Demonstrated network of, and relationships with industry and professional services contacts, including current and potential external business partners, investment bankers, venture capitalists, and industry executives.
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills, including ability to communicate information appropriately to the level of the audience.
  • Able to translate broad corporate strategies into clear, specific objectives and well-supported business plans.
  • Prior experience in preparing written reports and presentations to senior management and Boards of Directors.
  • Primary office located in San Bernardino County, but geographic and scheduling flexibility may be considered.

 

Certificates/Licenses/Registrations

  • At the discretion of the San Manuel Tribal Gaming Commission you may be required to obtain and maintain a gaming license.
  • As a condition of employment with the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians Investment Strategies Department, incumbents are required to undergo and successfully pass pre-employment and annual post-employment background investigation including, but not limited to, Live-Scan fingerprinting, drug screening and criminal history background check.
